·      A tip or trick used for any project, either past or present is eligible.

·      A specific job, procedure, or “jig” can be submitted only once.

·      A submitted job must contain all photographs, the PMR file, and if available, a photograph of the finished and installed project.

Tips & Tricks Submissions

1.  Measuring walls as a 2D contour (Example provided by ETemplate Technical Staff)

For some jobs, walls just need to be measured as 2D contours and not 3D surfaces.  This may be for the layout of cabinets, casework, countertops or other items.

For this type of job, you are typically measuring the profile of the wall(s) at a fairly constant height.  The point data will then create the desired contour design.  When doing this type of measure, you need to put the XY markers on the floor so that the wall contour becomes an XY shape.  You can also put the scale/constraint bars on the floor.

When shooting a project like this, it is important that there are points that span both the horizontal and vertical aspects of the photos.  This can be done by making sure you have points at the contour height (maybe 36”) and on the floor (XY and scales).  Depending on the size of the job, additional markers may be needed on the floor or wall at floor level (cardstock) to create this important dispersion of data in the photographs.

2. Measuring in a tight area? (Example provided by ETemplate Technical Staff)

Measuring an area too small to accomodate a scale bar?  Use a strip of your coded labels as your constraint.  Tear off the middle strip and place them on a flat surface (vertically on radius wall).  The distance between each point is 4.125 inches, so a strip of 5 codes would be 16.50 inches.  This same type of constraint can be used for very large jobs where your 3 scales just isn't enough, simply use several of them.

3. Searching for unmarked points?
(Example provided by ETemplate Technical Staff)

When looking for an additional photo with an unmarked point that matches one that is marked but has a low angle: Highlight several points around the object point in a photo where it is marked. Then hit the “W” key to expand the highlighted points to all photos. Look in the photos that have red highlighted points to see if your object point is there. This helps to find points that may be obscured in the light or dark corners of photos.
